Senior Fire Services Inspector - Water Based Fire Systems

The purpose of the Senior Fire Services Inspector (Water Based Fire Systems) is to apply your knowledge of water-based fire systems in conducting inspections. This requires an understanding of the end-to-end capacity to identify and mitigate risks to the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC); to manage inspection activities with the intent of identifying essential safety measures to safeguard the Commission. Ensure compliance and governance practices are maintained and collaborate with internal teams and external bodies to review, maintain and establish adequate fire services practices and build relevant frameworks to manage issues and provide resolution to valued customers and relevant cohorts across the organisation.

Work flexibly from either Brisbane or one of our regional centres; Cairns, Gold Coast, Mackay, Maryborough, Rockhampton, Toowoomba, Townsville, Sunshine Coast (subject to availability)  * All training will be conducted in Brisbane. 

Key Outcomes and Accountabilities 

  • Provide a high level of technical advice to consumers, internal customers, stakeholders, and industry groups relating to fire services water-based systems in the state of Queensland by interpreting and providing advice on legislation, standards, policies, guidelines, and practices.
  • Support the Manager Services Trades Unit, to provide services to other areas of QBCC as directed through the provision of advice and assistance in technical fire services water-based systems related matters.
  • Manage a case load of inspections that includes, conducting reactive and proactive technical inspections and the preparation of detailed reports surrounding breaches of legislation, standards, policies, guidelines, and practices.
  • Undertake fire audits, inspections and licence checks for the purpose of ensuring licensing and technical requirements of work performed is being adhered to.
  • Represent the Commission and contribute high quality technical advice and presentations as required on forums, groups, and committees. Prepare communication materials, (e.g., submissions, reports, correspondence, and briefing papers etc.) on a range of fire services water-based systems matters and provide high quality written and oral advice to managers, senior executives, and stakeholders.
  • Plan and implement operational procedure and system improvements in response to organisational and regulatory changes.
  • Prepare technical reports and statements, to assist in disciplinary proceedings and give evidence as a technical witness before Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal and other Courts.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to all staff of the Commission and external customers to instil a high level of trust and confidence in the QBCC by its stakeholders and the general Queensland community.

Candidate Attributes

  1. Interpret and apply contemporary fire standards, practices, legislation, and codes within the construction industry.
  2. Use, skill, and knowledge to undertake high level and complex regulatory inspections regarding water based fire systems matters, in a contentious environment.
  3. Have the ability to use an evidence-based approach with a focus on solutions.
  4. High level of interpersonal, consultative, negotiation and mediation Ability to build and maintain strong professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  5. High level case management skills and demonstrated high quality oral and written communication skills.
  6. Contribute to the team to achieve outcomes and effective work relationships.
  7. High level research, analytical and problem-solving skills including the ability to actively contribute to business improvement practices.

Qualification/Technical Requirements (Mandatory)

  1. Hold- an unrestricted water-based fire system—install and maintain licence with the QBCC.
  2. Work safely in the Construction Industry (White Card).
  3. Current Queensland Drivers Licence – (Class C - Motor Vehicle).
  4. Extensive experience in the installation of water-based fire systems of fire service installations.
