We are seeking an enthusiastic leader to provide high level support to the Regional Director by coordinating the delivery of operational programs within the region specifically related to two broad management areas known as Mulgalands and Sandstone. Mulgalands area contains approximately 574,000 hectares of parks and forests in southwest Queensland, including Currawinya National Park, one of Queensland’s largest and iconic parks. The Sandstone area contains approximately 750,000 hectares of parks and forests in the sandstone country of central/ southern Queensland, including Carnarvon National Park, recognised as one of Queensland’s top 10 national parks.

The Principal Ranger (West) oversees approximately 1,324,000 hectares of parks and forests. There are two broad management areas known as Mulgalands and Sandstone. Mulgalands area contains approximately 574,000 hectares of parks and forests in southwest Queensland, including Currawinya National Park (344,000 ha), one of Queensland's largest and iconic parks. The Sandstone area contains approximately 750,000 hectares of parks and forests in the sandstone country of central/ southern Queensland. Excellent communication and team skills are a requirement of this position, including the ability to liaise with a wide range of internal and external clients including First Nations groups, to ensure operational programs are successfully implemented.
The location of this position is at Roma or Charleville however, long distance travel to other locations will be required, where overnight accommodation may vary from motels to park barracks, to bush camps in remote locations. Due to the remoteness of some locations and difficult to access areas, it is advisable that the successful applicant has a degree of physical fitness and an ability to work in isolated locations.
This position works on a Monday to Friday roster (5/2), however weekend work may be required to conduct compliance or respond to emergency situations such as wildfires.
Your role:
The Principal Ranger AO7 is a role in which you must be able to:
- Understand, support and guide operational outcomes relating to strategically focused programs including resource industry, fire, NRM, cultural heritage, asset and visitor management, and provide input to operational policies, guidelines and procedures to streamline activities;
- Lead and manage a multidisciplinary team, many of whom may be geographically dispersed across the region- Manage compliance processes and systems in accordance with legislative obligations and statutory requirements relating to resource industry, fire, pest, asset and visitor management;
- Liaise and negotiate where appropriate with centric services units (state-wide support units) to ensure activities and functions are in accordance with QPWS policies and processes;
- Proactively build and sustain positive close relationships and consultative processes with internal and external stakeholders including members of the community, Indigenous peoples, special interest groups, other government agencies (local, state and federal) and industries relevant to the region to ensure effective resource industry, fire, pest, asset and visitor management on the parks and forest estate;
- Provide precise and effective financial administration and workforce management standards by ensuring that staff have the technical knowledge, skills, infrastructure and administrative support to discharge their duties; and
