The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is seeking expressions of interest for a PO6 Senior Crown Prosecutor in Wakefield Chambers.

Applicants are primarily responsible for prosecuting complex and difficult cases, appearing as counsel in superior court trials and a range of other criminal proceedings, and providing professional mentorship and supervision to legal and support staff.

This is a temporary flexible full-time position, commencing 20 May 2024 for a period of 12 months, with possibility of extension.

About the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions:
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) represents the State of Queensland in criminal cases. The ODPP's significant responsibility is to prosecute criminal matters in the High Court of Australia, Court of Appeal (Qld), Supreme Court, Mental Health Court, District Court, the Childrens Court of Queensland and the Magistrates Court (in limited locations and matters).

About your opportunity:
A temporary PO6 Senior Crown Prosecutor role is available in Wakefield Chambers on a flexible full-time basis, from 20 May 2024 for a period of 12 months, with possibility of extension.

As a Senior Crown Prosecutor, the incumbent will be responsible for:
• Appearing as leading counsel in a range of criminal proceedings, including complex superior court trials.
• Providing the Director of Public Prosecutions with specialist, expert, authoritative advice on questions of criminal law and evidence.
• Exercising, without supervision, the discretion to initiate, vary and discontinue serious criminal charges.
• Identifying and address the needs of victims of crime.
• Communicating persuasively with judges, counsel, solicitors, police officers, witnesses, victims of crime and court officials regarding matters for prosecution involving contentious and significant issues.
• Motivating and contributing to the professional development and supervision of Crown Prosecutors, legal officers and support staff
• Being actively involved in activities aimed at improving ODPP practices.

The successful candidate will be a team player who demonstrates:
• A comprehensive understanding and knowledge of Queensland criminal law and its practice including the ability to prepare and conduct complex and difficult criminal hearings, trials, sentences and appeals in the superior courts and provide advice on legal and tactical issues.
• A demonstrated understanding of emerging issues impacting the criminal justice system.
• Excellent communication skills and proven ability to negotiate and communicate with influence, with a range of stakeholders including the judiciary, defence counsel, police officers and the community.
• An active interest in contributing to improving work practices.

Mandatory qualifications, conditions and requirements:
You will be admitted as a Legal Practitioner in a State or Territory of Australia (please indicate date of admission).
