As the Principal Policy Officer, you will provide high-level policy and legislation leadership and expertise to support and develop more junior team members and career progression pathways. You will foster high-level legislation and policy capability and contribute to a pool of qualified and experienced staff able to undertake regulatory reforms and administration of the branch's and department’s legislative portfolio.

Your contribution:
• Lead research and analysis of environmental policy and legislation problems to identify achievable solutions.
• Prepare legislative solutions considering government policy agenda, departmental priorities and budgetary constraints.
• Lead the preparation of legislation products such as drafting instructions, bills or regulations and other supporting documentation.
• Lead the development of products including discussion papers, consultation strategies and briefing notes.
• Liaise and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders on a range of policy issues within a multi-disciplinary environment to ensure environmental outcomes are achieved and standards are maintained.
• Work with and through others to build and maintain effective working relationships.
• Manage projects to completion by identifying risks and managing expectations.
• Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.

About you:
• Demonstrated high-level ability in researching and critically analysing environmental policy issues to identify legislative solutions that are based on evidence and are fit for purpose.
• Demonstrated high-level experience in managing and coordinating projects to completion, establish priorities and meet deadlines.
• Demonstrated high-level experience in applying key concepts and principles of legislation when developing policy responses.
• Demonstrated high-level ability to communicate efficiently and effectively to deliver quality written communication products, including the preparation of sensitive materials.
• Demonstrated experience in managing staff to work cohesively to achieve results.
• Contribution to workplace equity and diversity that enriches our culture of safety, innovation, respect and inclusion.
