The Queensland Police Service's (QPS) Health, Safety and Wellbeing Division has embarked on one of its most significant organisational transformations. Central to these improvements is the significant uplift in the capacity and capability of our Safety Group.

The Safety Group comprises specialist safety, risk, governance and compliance functions including those for psychosocial hazards and risk management. The Group also play a key role in strategic planning for health, safety and wellbeing and is involved in high level projects and program development.

There are three Principal Health and Safety Advisor roles available - 2 permanent positions and 1 temporary. The successful appointees will be initially assigned to one of two teams but will be required to work flexibly across the teams as required. One team has primary responsibilities for central governance, compliance, state-wide and significant reviews and systems, and organisational development; the other has primary responsibilities for managing day to day WHS operations, advisory and support services including through a state-wide team of locally based Health and Safety Advisors.

You will apply your well-developed skills in WHS management systems and operations to support improvements across the breadth of QPS's WHS functions. As a skilled practitioner, you will effectively partner with stakeholders and lead your team to innovate and lift safety performance and capability to deliver outcomes leading to legacy benefits.

The core capability requirements for this role are:

  • Lead a team to operationalise health and safety functions within the QPS.
  • Contribute to strategic planning in line with organisational goals relating to work, workplace and worker health and safety.
  • Plan, formulate, develop, implement, and monitor work health and safety management system and performance standards which establish compliance with relevant legislation.
  • Research, develop and implement systems and initiatives, practices and policies relating to work health and safety to support the corporate health and safety management system framework.
  • Develop documentation, including Cabinet and ministerial submissions, executive briefs, policies, procedures, reports, staff communications and review proposals on work health and safety issues and initiatives.
  • Provide WHS advice to all levels of management, health and safety advisors and QPS members, including guidance for WHS risk assessment and management.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary teams and liaise and negotiate with staff in the QPS health and safety consultative network and other internal and external stakeholders.

Role Requirements:

Qualification:

  • Possession of a Certificate IV in Workplace Health and Safety or relevant qualification in Health and Safety is highly desirable.

Technical/ Operational/ Educational experience:

  • Established skills and experience in work health and safety preferably in a large or highly regulated organisation, would support success in this role.
  • Experience in managing a safety management system compliant with ISO 45001:2018 would be highly regarded.

Other:

  • C class driver's licence is desirable.
  • Intrastate travel is a requirement of this position.
  • May be required to occasionally participate in a 24-hour critical incident on-call roster.
