The Litigation unit works on behalf of the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation and other government departments, conducting prosecutions and defending appeals against decisions in relation to environmental matters, including Planning and Environment Court and Land Court appeals. The Litigation unit also provides strategic advice and direction on the department's regulatory actions and enforcement role.

The responsibilities of a PO5 Senior Lawyer are exercised with respect to matters which are the more serious, high profile and complex.

You will be a highly competent and qualified lawyer, with strong communication and technical skills and the ability to influence others based on sound decision-making and evidence-based reasoning. It will be advantageous if your experience relates to litigation and advice work in a regulatory environment and if you have experience in conducting criminal or civil court proceedings.

As the PO5 Senior Lawyer you will:
• Practice across various jurisdictions, including; conducting criminal proceedings in lower and superior courts and civil proceedings in the Planning and Environment Court, the Land Court and the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal
• Brief senior and junior counsel on complex criminal and civil matters and mentor junior lawyers and staff
• Demonstrate initiative and the ability establish priorities while managing of all aspects of litigation files within tight timeframes
• Provide high quality legal advice in complex and high-profile matters, and draft complex legal documents and concise correspondence including Ministerial briefs and responses, Cabinet submissions, briefing notes, advices and recommendations.
• Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.
