This position is in the Waste Policy and Legislation unit, which is responsible for stewardship of the Waste Reduction and Recycling Act 2011 and its subordinate legislation, and ensures the legislation remains fit for purpose and effective in delivering its objectives. The unit oversees the key strategies and action plans which guide Queensland efforts to grow the circular economy, improve recycling and reduce the generation of waste, and contributes to the national agenda for waste and circular economy through working groups and steering committees.
This position works collaboratively with other areas of the department, local councils, community groups and industry bodies on policies and strategies that seek to achieve the environmental and economic benefits of reduced waste generation and improved resource recovery.
Specific project work in the unit addresses emerging waste, resource recovery and circular economy issues using a problem analysis and solution design approach with consideration of environmental risk, economic and social factors. The position will be required to guide and undertake consultation, assessment of alternative options and their regulatory impacts, the provision of advice in strategy and policy documents, which may require progression of legislation, amendments or other statutory instruments. There is a focus on achieving the targets established in Queensland's Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy and tackling key challenges for the national agenda such as batteries and end of life tyres.
