The Youth Co Responder will work collaboratively as part of the Youth Co-Responder Team comprising of the Department of Youth Justice and the Queensland Police Service (QPS).

The Youth Co Responder will provide support and coordinate service delivery to ensure the required actions and referrals for young people at risk, are undertaken in a timely and efficient manner.

This will require the Youth Co Responder to work with dedicated QPS officers in unmarked police cars and in the office, to connect with young people and families, patrol hotspots and link in internal and external stakeholders.

YCRT provides targeted and collaborative engagement with young people through the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and the Department of Youth Justice (YJ) partnership across 13 sites when communities need it most.

Each team is made up of a Team Leader and rotating part time and casual shift workers, that operate 24/7 in conjunction with Queensland Police Service. 

Key Responsibilities 

As a Youth Co-Responder, you will specifically:

• Deliver support services (both during and after hours), in collaboration with the QPS, by effectively responding to, engaging with, and assessing the risks and needs of children and young people that come to the attention of police, to minimise or prevent the likelihood of involvement or further entrenchment in the youth justice system.
• Proactively and effectively engage with children and young people to deliver support services, including reminding young people about their bail conditions and upcoming court appearances; referring young people to programs and agencies; linking young people in with their families and support persons; and connecting with Youth Justice counterparts to inform case management activities. 
• Engage with and establish partnerships with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders and service providers, including the QPS, in a number of local areas, to achieve quality casework outcomes.
• Undertake a range of record and information management tasks including maintenance of case records, preparation of reports, performance reporting and data entry to inform casework and accountability.
• Develop strong links to YJSC counterparts and share information to inform improved court and case management activities in both community and custodial settings.
• Actively participate in training and professional development activities to develop, maintain and enhance knowledge and competencies to ensure that service delivery is based on contemporary, evidence based, best practice principles and is consistent with current practice trends and departmental objectives.
• Actively participate in and contribute to the good governance and objectives of the region and department.
• Contribute to a departmental culture that ensures sensitive and effective communication with people from other cultures including people from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander backgrounds and be responsive to cultural protocols to ensure they are embedded in service delivery.
