The Director Disaster Management Unit (DMU) is responsible for leading the transformation of the organisation’s approach to disaster management.
The focus of the role is steering the development of the department’s disaster management framework in accordance with government policy and standards and the Department of Housing, Local Government, Planning and Public Works’ (DHLGPPW) strategic direction.
Through the development of critical partnerships with external agencies and an ability to impart strategic vision internally, the Director DMU will ensure that DHLGPPW’s disaster management capability is fit-for-purpose, evidence-based and aligned with the Queensland Disaster Management Arrangements (QDMA).

What you will be doing:
• Providing strategic leadership and direction to the DMU to facilitate the development of a fit-for-purpose disaster management framework that supports the organisation to deliver on its vision and objectives.
• Leading and embedding cultural change to transform DHLGPPW's approach to disaster management, including capability building across the organisation to support the delivery and achievement of departmental goals and priorities.
• Fostering and maintaining strong relationships with partner organisations, external stakeholders and the senior and executive leadership teams at DHLGPPW, to ensure support and momentum for DMU deliverables.
• Providing strategic perspectives and critical agency insights to the department's executive, to support the delivery of strategic disaster management objectives.
• Ensuring that the DMU has the required capability to meet the organisation's current and longer-term requirements.
• Providing expert, evidence/insights-based and trusted advice to the General Manager Disaster Resilience Program, and other members of the executive leadership team on emerging and innovative trends relating to disaster management.
• Leading and directing the effective use and management of the work unit's human and financial resources, to deliver services in an efficient and commercially sustainable manner.
• Fostering a workplace environment that values performance, continuous improvement, innovation and integrity in the delivery of high-quality services.
• Leading the co-ordination of the department's response and recovery to any potential disaster that may impact on the department.
• Leading and implementing disaster-related training and exercising programs for the department's executive and disaster liaison officers across the Department.
The skills you will need include being able to:
• Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary disaster management principles, legislative requirements, government policies and practices, and potential
implications of these for the business unit.
• Demonstrated ability to successfully lead and manage organisational change in a large and complex organisation, with a proven record of successful outcomes.
• Superior communication, consultation and negotiation skills and demonstrated high level ability to build and maintain internal and external relationships, including the ability to influence and motivate people.
• Experience developing and maintaining corporate and strategic partnerships, and stakeholder engagement at the highest levels of a public sector, not-for-profit or nongovernment organisation.
• Extensive experience in leading the development, implementation, and integration of disaster management strategies and plans, which produce beneficial outcomes in a large, complex and highly regulated public sector organisation.
• Proven success in managing high risk and/or high-profile projects in a complex organisation, with a high-level focus on risk management.
• Well-developed leadership skills in creating and maintaining effective teams, driving performance and achieving effective service delivery.
