The First Nations Division is building cultural safety through capability, trust, transparency and strengthening relationships between the QPS and First Nations communities across Queensland. This is achieved by sharing information and developing initiatives, in a collaborative approach to prevent harm and together develop a safer Queensland for everyone.

Led by an Executive Director, our team includes First Nations members who bring extensive policing and cultural knowledge, and through their passion and lived experience, drive transformative change.

TARGETED VACANCY - This is an identified position. It is a genuine occupational requirement that an Identified position be filled by a First Nations person as permitted by and arguable under Section 25, 104 and 105 of the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Act (1991).

As a key First Nations representative within the QPS, you will provide cultural leadership to drive cultural awareness to ensure the QPS acts with integrity in accordance with First Nations cultural protocols.

You will build, maintain and nurture productive communication and cooperation among operational police, senior QPS management, First Nations Elders, respected community leaders, First Nations Organisations and government agencies. The goal is to offer cultural guidance that supports the implementation and delivery of the QPS Reframing the Relationship Plan.

The core capability requirements for this role are:

• Build, maintain and nurture productive relationships among operational police, senior QPS management, First Nations Elders, respected community leaders, First Nations Organisations and government agencies.
• Support and facilitate the implementation of strategies to improve engagement with First Nations communities.
• Provide high quality, well researched advice on emerging issues likely to affect the provision of policing services to First Nations communities in Queensland.
• Review policies, legislation and practices which impact on First Nations communities and work with other agencies to achieve appropriate recognition and incorporation of law enforcement issues.
• Coordinate and undertake special projects relating to First Nations issues.
• Prepare submissions, options and recommendations relating to First Nations issues which impacts on the QPS.
• Represent the Service in relevant national, state and community environments and forums.

Role Requirements:

Mandatory - This is an identified position. It is a genuine requirement that an Identified position be filled by a First Nations person as permitted by, and arguable under Section 25, 104 and 105 of the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Act (1991).
