In the historical township of Cooktown, a unique leadership opportunity presents itself for a Ranger poised to effect meaningful conservation. Entrusted with the preservation and management of the protected area estate, this role occupies a pivotal position within the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service & Partnerships (QPWS&P).
As the Ranger in Charge, you'll helm a dedicated team in close collaboration with Joint Management partners, including the Land Trust Rangers, to oversee the rich biodiversity and cultural tapestry of the parks. Your dynamic management style—resilient, adaptive, and culturally astute—will be critical in orchestrating a diverse array of park management tasks, particularly during the vibrant dry season. The essence of this position lies within its people focus; your track record in communication, leadership, and nurturing multicultural teams will see you excel.
Under your stewardship, the team will deftly execute maintenance schedules for park infrastructure, manage budgets and capital works programs, and ensure the highest standard of staff management, training, and accompanying administrative tasks. Your daily operations will span planning and delivering intricate fire management plans, as well as orchestrating strategic weed and pest management to support the natural environment. You'll champion compliance activities with an educational focus, patrolling high visitor areas to ensure the safety and enjoyment of Queensland's natural heritage.
At the operational core, you will foster productive relationships with stakeholders, including neighbouring landholders, government departments, industry groups, and, crucially, Aboriginal Traditional Owners, nurturing the cultural roots that profoundly shape our approach to land management.
For this role, we seek an individual who not only understands our organisational vision and objectives but one who embodies them—someone who leads by example and integrates organisational priorities into daily operations. You will demonstrate flexibility, resourcefulness, and an unwavering commitment to achieving tangible outcomes through teamwork and strategic resource allocation.
Key to your application is the ability to articulate how you can further our mission of equity, diversity, respect, and inclusion. Formal qualifications in Protected Land Management, although not required, will be highly regarded, as will experience in remote work and travel, reflecting the versatile nature of park operations.
If you are prepared to take on the mantle of responsibility that comes with being a Ranger in Charge—inspiring teams, preserving our environment, honouring cultural heritage, and ensuring the ongoing safety and enjoyment of our parks—then Cooktown awaits your expertise and passion. Join us in safeguarding these landscapes for all Queenslanders, now and into the future.
Applications to remain current for 12 months.
