Crime and Intelligence Legal Services is seeking an experienced senior lawyer with a passion to make a difference to join our dedicated team. In this leadership role you have opportunity for innovation through involvement in implementing new powers in conjunction and work with some of the most interesting operational work. The role is rewarding with the opportunity to make an impact by supporting the frontline and community safety.
You will provide legal advice to investigators, senior officers and members of the Senior Executive in relation to complex aspects of investigations, policy and other operational law enforcement initiatives affecting or likely to affect the Queensland Police Service. You will work in a collaborative and supportive team, with mentoring and guidance provided. Each senior legal officer operates as a team leader, leading a small number legal officers and supporting the manager. The range of duties recognises excellent communication, analytical and leadership skills that could be drawn from experience in a number of legal specialties and backgrounds.
The core capability requirements for this role are:
• Act as a specialist legal practitioner to provide legal advice and assistance to investigators and officers of other disciplines in relation to complex aspects of criminal investigations, police powers, the management and disruption of reportable offenders and response to major incidents.
• Provide oral and/or written briefings as required on complex aspects of criminal law, evidence, administrative law, statutory interpretation, policy, procedures, risk management and other operational law enforcement initiatives affecting or likely to affect the Queensland Police Service.
• Undertake the functions of drafting warrants and settling complex affidavits and applications and appearing on behalf of police officers and the Queensland Police Service in relation to more complex applications, principally for covert warrants.
• Appear and provide assistance in an advisory capacity at court/tribunal hearings as required.
• Liaise with relevant internal Queensland Police Service units and external agencies including the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and other government and law enforcement agencies.
• Provide high quality confidential advice, on short notice, to senior officers and members of the Senior Executive on complicated and sensitive operational legal matters.
• Assist in the development and delivery of specialist training programs and projects.
• Supervise and mentor legal officers within the Crime and Intelligence Legal Services as required by the Manager, Crime and Intelligence Legal Services.
Role Requirements:
Mandatory -
• Admission, or eligibility for immediate admission, as a barrister or solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and enrolment or eligibility for enrolment, to practice in the Federal and High Courts of Australia.
• Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance to the minimal level of Negative Vetting Level 1.
Qualification -
• Possession of a degree in law from a recognised tertiary institution, or equivalent qualifications.
Other -
• The successful applicant/s will be required to undergo psychometric assessment, prior to appointment. Applicants are advised that whilst performing the duties of the position they may be exposed to material (written, visual and audio) of a graphic and sensitive nature.
• The successful applicant will be required to perform duty in locations as directed by Legal Division.
• Driver's licence desirable
