Senior Family Lawyer (Cairns)

As a senior lawyer, you will represent the interests of legally aided clients in family law and related matters while assisting the principal lawyer to supervise legal work and develop the legal skills of, train and guide staff within the team. You will liaise and maintain relationships with key stakeholders to improve service delivery for clients and you will also have an opportunity to contribute to policy developments and law reform issues. The work is challenging and complex but rewarding.

The successful candidate will play an integral role in the following:

  • Represent clients, including preparing matters, instructing counsel and personally appearing as an advocate in complex family law and related matters.
  • Help the principal lawyer to supervise legal work and develop the legal skills, train and guide staff within the regional office, Legal Aid Queensland lawyers statewide and also external legal practitioners, regarding family law and related matters.
  • As necessary, provide duty lawyer services and legal information and advice to clients and the public.
  • Support Legal Aid Queensland's contributions to policy, procedure, law reform and legal service delivery initiatives as required, and participate in the development of team plans and work practices.
  • Develop and provide continuing professional development to Legal Aid Queensland staff and preferred suppliers and also contribute to community legal education of external stakeholders to increase awareness of family law issues.

You will have:

  • You have extensive experience in the conduct of family law, domestic and family violence, child protection and related matters including preparation, representation, and advocacy.
  • You have a detailed knowledge of the practice and procedure of family and related law and are able to contribute to changes in policies, procedures and systems. You are also committed to self-development and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of the law and procedure.
  • You contribute to the professional development of others including, providing clear guidance, constructive feedback, and legal supervision..
  • You contribute to a healthy and inclusive workforce and can build and sustain relationships with team members. You are self-motivated and can demonstrate resilience in an environment where there are competing priorities.
