Your contribution:
This role involves leading the integration of scientific knowledge & tools into waterway & water quality management through statutory & non-statutory planning frameworks. It includes overseeing initiatives, investigating complex water issues, & developing strategies, decision support systems, & mechanisms to optimise sustainability outcomes. The position provides scientific leadership & technical advice on environmental policy, planning, & strategy, particularly in aquatic ecosystems & water quality assessment. Building strong networks with agencies, organisations, & research institutions is essential, as is engaging with stakeholders to promote ecologically sustainable water development & planning. Key responsibilities include representing the department in negotiations with committees, research institutions, & government bodies, critically reviewing submissions & reports to develop policy recommendations, & preparing Ministerial & Cabinet briefings. The role also involves coordinating resourcing arrangements, including financial, staffing, & partnerships, to achieve business outcomes with senior management approval.

About you:
You will:
• Demonstrate expertise in leading & managing team performance, applying advanced project management methodologies to plan, prioritise, & deliver outcomes in complex environments with competing priorities & ambiguity.
• Have exceptional written & verbal communication skills, enabling you to professionally represent the department to key stakeholders, the community, &
industry.
• Bring strong interpersonal & negotiation skills, with the ability to consult, liaise, & build effective relationships across boundaries while modelling ethical & professional behaviour.
• Possess in-depth knowledge of Queensland Government policies, programs, & scientific areas relevant to reef protection & management.
• Apply advanced analytical, research, & critical evaluation skills, addressing complex problems & providing strategic advice & innovative solutions in reef science & management.
• Hold a degree in an environmental science or environmental engineering discipline or in natural resource planning or natural resource management or agreed equivalent from a recognised tertiary institution.
