About the role

The Senior Privacy Officer plays a critical role in supporting Queensland government agencies on the interpretation and administration of the Information Privacy Act 2009 (IP Act). You will manage privacy complaints, assess notifications received under the Mandatory Notification of Data Breach (MNDB) scheme, and provide expert advice to improve privacy practices across the public sector.

In this role, you will work collaboratively with the internal and external stakeholders to promote a privacy conscious and transparent culture within the Queensland public service. You will also contribute to the development of resources, training materials, and publications to raise awareness of privacy obligations and emerging trends.

This is a permanent, full-time (flexible) position that offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on privacy governance while working in a supportive, inclusive environment that values innovation, transparency, and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Manage privacy complaints and data breach notifications under the Mandatory Notification of Data Breach (MNDB) scheme, including assessments, advice, mediations, and correspondence in line with the Information Privacy Act 2009 (IP Act).
• Provide advice, guidance and assistance to Queensland public sector entities to improve information handling and understand legislative responsibilities.
• Develop resources, training materials, and publications for OIC staff and public sector entities, including policies, templates and guidelines.
• Promote awareness of the IP Act and emerging trends through events, publications and training.
• Represent the OIC at meetings, forums, and awareness activities, such as Privacy Awareness Week and practitioner forums.

Our purpose, as a contemporary regulator, is to promote and independently uphold information access and privacy rights.  We facilitate greater and easier public access to government-held information and assist agencies understand their obligations under the IP Act to safeguard the personal information that they hold. Our office reviews agency decisions about access to information, mediates privacy complaints, and monitors and reports on agency compliance to Parliament.
