Reporting to the Principal Engineer, Dam Safety, the Senior Engineer is responsible for undertaking engineering investigations of referable dams, assessing technical documentation submitted by dam owners, participating in technical reviews and undertaking hydrological and hydraulic consequence assessments for small dams.

The role also provides opportunities to lead or participate in technical reviews, field work and site visits and contribute to industry best practice guidelines. The role can be based in Brisbane or in a regional location to facilitate an adaptive and agile workforce.

Our dam safety team plays a pivotal role in regulating and overseeing water dams across the State, ensuring that dam owners adhere to dam safety standards in our published guidelines.

Key Duties and Accountabilities
• Provide high level technical reviews of dam safety documentation including failure impact assessments, emergency action plans, safety reviews and inspection reports to make compliance recommendations against the Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act 2008 (Act), other relevant legislation, guidelines and industry standards.
• Undertake site-based audits of referable dams to identify safety issues and determine the level of compliance with legislative requirements and safety conditions
• Provide advice and liaise with dam owners, stakeholders and departmental staff regarding the departmental legislation, policy and guidelines relating to the regulation of referable dams.
• Inspect water supply dams in response to known or suspected dam safety issues, impacts or public enquiries as an authorised officer under the Act and provide recommendations to the Principal Engineer and/or or Director Dam Safety.
• Undertake or peer review internal hydrological and hydraulic consequence assessments for small dams using the “Guideline for failure impact assessment of water dams” methodology and advise the Principal Engineer and Director Dam Safety if dam safety regulations apply.
• Prepare reports, briefs and correspondence as required, including draft dam safety conditions and referable dam notice documentation.
• Participate in the development and implementation of dam safety policy, guidelines and standards.
• Participate in mentoring staff and students in dam safety and consequence assessment concepts
• Promote dam safety in Queensland through the development of networks and consulting with internal staff, other government agencies, key stakeholders, the community and other interested parties on dam safety issues.
• Undertake duties in accordance with internal work procedures and timeframes.
