The opportunity
As Principal Scientist (Aquaculture), you will
• In consultation with the Science Leader and key stakeholders, lead and manage a portfolio of research, development and extension projects that enhance the environmental sustainability, productivity, profitability and growth of Queensland's aquaculture industry.
• Provide science leadership, advice and reporting for Queensland's aquaculture sector.
• Identify new aquaculture industry development opportunities for Queensland and develop research projects to deliver on these opportunities.
• Secure funding to support research for new and ongoing projects.
• Undertake high-quality research or extension activities around priority issues and opportunities facing the Queensland aquaculture industry.
• Work with the Science Leader to deliver a strategic approach to aquaculture research within DPI and more broadly across stakeholders.
• Engage widely to establish and maintain effective relationships with aquaculture stakeholders.
• Professionally lead and manage a team of scientific officers, nurturing a positive team culture by fostering an environment that values individual contribution, effective team performance and continuous improvement linked to organisation goals and corporate governance.
• Share information, support and speak on behalf of others when necessary and deal with conflict to manage difficult individuals, issues and situations in an immediate, direct, objective and positive way.
You will directly supervise four senior scientists and assist them with management of their teams and the pool of casual technicians.

• evaluating your potential contributions to the department and how your involvement would uphold our commitment to equity, diversity, respect and inclusion.
Mandatory qualifications
• For appointment to the Professional Officer stream, you must possess an Australian bachelor's degree (AQF level 7 or equivalent) or higher in Animal, Agricultural or Environmental Science from a recognised tertiary institution.
• For international qualifications, the applicant will need their qualification assessed, to determine comparability with the Australian Qualifications Framework.
The Department of Employment, Small Business and Training can assist with these assessments for Queensland residents.
