Assistant Commissioner, Regulatory Audits and Investigations

Are you a strategic leader with a passion for promoting transparency, accountability, and privacy protection in the public sector? The OIC is seeking an experienced and dynamic professional to lead our Regulatory Audit and Investigations team.

As the Assistant Commissioner, you will play a key role in overseeing the regulatory performance monitoring functions under the Right to Information Act 2009 (RTI Act) and the Information Privacy Act 2009 (IP Act). You will lead investigations, audits, and reviews of public sector agencies to ensure compliance with legislative obligations and drive continuous improvement in government transparency and privacy practices.

About the role

This is a temporary, full-time opportunity for a period of 6 months, however as a flexible and supportive workplace we recognise full-time doesn't suit everyone, so if you would like to request to work a part-time fraction between 0.8 – 0.9 FTE please note this in your application.

Key responsibilities

We are seeking a strong leader who can inspire and support a professional team. In the role of Assistant Commissioner, you will:  

  • Analyse and address compliance challenges within the Queensland public sector regarding Right to Information and Privacy legislation.
  • Work with Commissioners and peers to evaluate trends and develop targeted regulatory actions for effective compliance with RTI and IP Acts.
  • Provide timely, strategic advice on the use of regulatory audit and investigation functions to promote transparency and accountability in government agencies.
  • Prepare and present independent, transparent reports on investigations, audits, and reviews, including findings and recommendations.
  • Develop strategic approaches to regulatory actions that enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the Information Commissioner's functions.
  • Foster professional development and capability-building within the team to meet current and future organisational needs.
  • Oversee annual reporting on the operation of the Acts, analysing data to identify trends, insights, and emerging issues.
  • Assist the Commissioners and Executive Leadership Team in achieving strategic objectives and Service Delivery Statement (SDS) measures.
  • Encourage cross-agency collaboration and a culture of continuous improvement within the Office of the Information Commissioner.

We have statutory functions and powers under the RTI and IP Acts to uphold greater and easier access to information held by government agencies.

We also assist agencies to understand their obligations under the RTI and IP Acts and use our regulatory powers Improve compliance. We are accountable for and report to Parliament on our operational performance and regulatory activities.
