The Director, Employee and Industrial Relations will provide ER/IR advice and consultancy services around public sector employment law, Enterprise Bargaining, disciplinary matters, policy and procedures, and industrial frameworks and instruments in a consultative and strategic way.

You will be leading a team of ER/IR specialists to provide advice on strategy on workplace relations, advice on any organisational changes, creating a positive culture to minimise employment issues and escalated matters. You will represent the business, for any matters needing to be escalated in the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission and provide advice around negotiations with unions.

To be successful in this role you will have strong IR/ER/Workplace Relations Management or specialist experience ideally in large complex organisations. You will be able to operate in an autonomous role, creating frameworks, policies, and strategies. You will be confident, credible, and well-versed in providing options, recommendations, and advice to all workplace employment cases and matters through resolution. You would have experience in enterprise bargaining within complex industrial and unionised environments.

Key responsibilities
 
As the Director, you will specifically:
  • Demonstrate cultural capability and/or a commitment to developing cultural capability to ensure an inclusive culture that aligns with the Human Rights Act 2019 and supports departmental programs and community partnerships aimed at preserving cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Provide professional, authoritative and timely strategic advice to the Chief Human Resources Officer, Director-General,  Deputy Directors-General, and other senior management on issues of a complex and sensitive nature pertaining to human resources, professional standards, complaints, industrial relations, enterprise bargaining.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with relevant industrial unions, the Public Sector Commission, Queensland Industrial Relations Commission and all internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure that significant strategic industrial relations, enterprise bargaining, and business partnerships across the employment lifecycle are delivered in agreed timeframes.
  • Promote a positive public image for the branch ensuring effective partnerships are developed with client groups and senior executives. 
  • Represent the department in significant forums and governance structures ensuring effective negotiation of people and culture issues pertinent to the department.   
  • Formulate and prepare submissions and briefing papers of a complex nature and negotiate recommendations at the executive level on strategies, policies and practices.
  • Provide leadership and direction to the team by promoting and maintaining a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.
  • Ensure effective management of human, financial and physical resources.
  • Promote an accountable, fair and safe work environment through the implementation of management practices, policies and procedures, including achievement planning and equal employment/anti-discrimination.
