The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is seeking expressions of interest for a PO6 Principal Legal Officer in Confiscations. The Principal Legal Officer, Confiscations prepares and appears for the State in applications arising under Chapter 3 of the Criminal Proceeds Confiscation Act 2002 (the Act) and for the Crime and Corruption Commission in administration of Chapters 2 and 2A of the Act.

This is a temporary flexible full-time position from date of commencement for a period of 6 months with a possibility of an extension.

About the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions:

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) represents the State of Queensland in criminal cases. The ODPP's significant responsibility is to prosecute criminal matters in the High Court of Australia, Court of Appeal (Qld), Supreme Court, Mental Health Court, District Court, the Childrens Court of Queensland and the Magistrates Court (in limited locations and matters).

About your opportunity:

This is a temporary flexible full-time position from date of commencement for a period of 6 months, with a possibility of an extension.

As a Principal Legal Officer, the incumbent will undertake the following:

  • Litigate confiscation proceedings in the Supreme Court or where required instruct counsel at hearings.
  • Appear as an advocate in the Supreme Court on applications under Chapters 2, 2A and 3 of the Act.
  • Draft highly complex legal documents such as originating applications, affidavits, draft orders and outlines of argument in relation to applications under the Act.
  • Provide high level advice to the Crime and Corruption Commission and the Queensland Police Service on matters arising from applications and sufficiency of evidence provided.
  • Advise prosecutors and legal officers in relation to issues raised by the application or possible application of the provisions of the Act.
  • Supervise the work of less experienced Confiscations staff. 
  • Identify and provide training to legal officers and paralegals in the office, and to police officers and officers of other agencies.

Mandatory qualifications, conditions and requirements:

You will be admitted as a Legal Practitioner in a State or Territory of Australia (please indicate date of admission).
