Your team

The areas of law handled within the Prosecutions and other Advocacy Team include:

Prosecutions and other general advocacy (70% of the workload)

Providing advice on the sufficiency of evidence and prospects of success, and conducting statutory prosecutions of simple and indictable offences including offences relating to:

  • public health, drugs and poisons
  • food safety and standards
  • breaches of gaming and liquor regulations
  • housing and education
  • health practitioner regulation
  • fair trading; and
  • workers' compensation fraud

Providing procedural and evidential advice, and appearing as advocate in:

  • coronial inquests
  • proceedings under the Mental Health Act 2016 including appeals in the Mental Health Court and reviews in the Mental Health Review Tribunal
  • blue card appeals
  • QCAT and QCATA hearings
  • professional regulation matters
  • subpoena and disclosure disputes;
  • general appeal matters;
  • other injective matters

Written advocacy & general advices (30% of the workload)

Providing general advice on:

  • procedural matters relating to prosecution and general advocacy matters conducted by the team
  • regulatory investigations and law enforcement
  • general statutory interpretation.

Your key responsibilities

  • Conduct a professional legal practice and undertake the range of legal work completed by the team.
  • When required, provide supervision and guidance to other members of the practice in conduct of legal matters.
  • As required, assist in:
    • the provision of legal training to officers of client departments and Crown Law
    • promoting Crown Law services to client departments
    • the provision of specialist advice and guidance on questions of law and practice to other officers within the legal practice group
    • liaising with officers of government departments, corporations and instrumentalities
    • negotiating skilfully in tough situations, winning concessions without damaging relationships
    • writing and communicating succinctly in a variety of settings to convey messages that will achieve a desired effect.
  • Participate in and maintain a proactive approach to self-development, including:
    • achievement of CPD points
    • participation in Crown Law's performance management framework and any feedback processes.
  • Comply at all times with the office standards, including:
    • the client service charter
    • the requirement to meet set targets for billable hours
    • quality and timeliness measures
    • quality assurance framework.
