Principal Lawyer

The Principal Lawyer provides authoritative and timely legal advice and representation to the Attorney-General, Director-General and departmental officers in relation to a wide range of legal matters for all areas of DoJ.
The Principal Lawyer supervises other lawyers at the P04 and P05 level and assists the Director to appropriately manage the workload of the team. The Principal Lawyer is expected to backfill the Director role when required.

Provide advocacy services in courts and tribunals for appropriate matters referred from departmental business units.
Provide superior, authoritative written legal advice and drafting in relation to departmental business activities and contentious issues, often of a complex and sensitive nature and which may be the subject of litigation, which are under consideration by the Attorney-General, Director-General, Executive Team and other senior departmental officers.
Provide management support to LAA through activities including:
• directly supervising and mentoring junior lawyers;
• proactively monitoring and adhering to time frames in the delivery of legal services to ensure a consistent, coordinated and effective approach to the provision of legal services for the department including particularly sensitive or complex matters;
• attending intra- and inter-departmental meetings or workgroups where required; and
• acting as the Director, LAA on an ad-hoc basis as required.
