The opportunity:
As a Technical Officer, you will:
• Collaborate with project leaders and other team members on a range of research projects including: field trials monitoring changes in weed populations with different management strategies; field assessment of residual herbicides and their persistence and on-farm research to evaluate shifts in weed populations over time.
• Liaise with project collaborators to ensure correct methodologies are used and results are communicated.
• Assist with field research - maintaining field trials currently at Wellcamp (west of Toowoomba) and on-stie at the Leslie Research Facility including manual removal of background weeds; establishing field sites and application of herbicide, crop and weed treatments, collecting data including plant and seed samples (weed and crop), collecting soil samples manually or via machine and assessment of herbicide efficacy (seed samples collected, hand harvesting crop).
• Making observations and accurately recording data from field trials. Entering data into spreadsheets ready for analysis. Liaising with biometric staff for data analysis and interpretation. Presentation of results both written and orally at project meetings and other opportunities.
• Ideally you will have a knowledge of weeds and/or crops, their growth and management and a knowledge of field trial operations.

Technical Requirements of the role:
• Ability to manually assess weed populations by conducting counts before and after herbicide treatment. This may require prolonged periods of bending or operating close to the ground.
• Ability to successfully establish and maintain weed and crop populations in the field, glasshouse and controlled environments.
• You will ideally have knowledge of and experience in herbicide application, evaluation of weed and crop populations and maintenance of field sites and controlled environment experiments.

What we are looking for (qualifications, registrations, experience):
There are some qualifications and licences that we see as essential. You must possess a:
• Diploma in Applied Science, Rural Science, or Rural Techniques from a recognised tertiary institution, or equivalent qualifications in a field relevant to the position.
• Hold (or be willing to obtain) a current Commercial Operators License for the safe application of herbicides.
• a current ‘C' class drivers licence.
