The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is a vital part of Queensland's justice system, representing the State in prosecuting criminal matters across courts such as the High Court of Australia, Supreme Court, District Court, and more. Our work addresses complex and sensitive legal matters, ensuring justice is upheld with professionalism and integrity.
About your role:
We're offering a temporary, flexible full-time position for a period of 3 months, with the potential for extension. This is your chance to bring your legal expertise to the forefront while working in a dynamic and supportive environment.
What This Role Offers:
As a Legal Officer, you'll engage in a variety of impactful and rewarding tasks, including:
- Preparing prosecution matters and appeal submissions with professionalism and timeliness.
- Building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, including defence counsel, solicitors, police officers, victims, and witnesses.
- Representing the Director as an advocate in court proceedings, including bail applications, sentences, committal hearings, and appeals in both Magistrates and higher courts.
- Collaborating with complainants and their families, especially in sensitive cases involving sexual or violent offences.
- Leading, supervising, and motivating legal support staff to excel in their roles.
- Contributing to initiatives that enhance work practices and improve organisational efficiency.
What We're Looking For:
The successful candidate will bring:
- Proficiency in applying legal principles and drafting legal documents, coupled with strong advocacy skills in Magistrates and/or higher courts.
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills to consult, negotiate, and collaborate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
- A natural ability to mentor, guide, and empower legal and support staff, while understanding the needs of victims of crime.
- A commitment to upholding the highest standards of professional competence and ethical conduct.
Mandatory Requirements
You must:
- Be admitted as a Legal Practitioner in a State or Territory of Australia (please provide your admission date).
