As part of the QPWS Technical Support team, you’ll lead coordination of marine animal strandings and support marine megafauna conservation across Queensland’s vast marine and island parks.

Work closely with volunteers, traditional owners, and stakeholders to boost response efforts and data collection, ensuring marine mammals and turtles receive top-tier protection. Help translate strategic conservation plans into real-world impact, contributing to the Reef 2050 Long Term Sustainability Plan and beyond.

Great Barrier Reef and Marine Parks (GBR&MP) Region are excited to share an incredible opportunity for a Senior Conservation Officer to join the team on a permanent basis.

As one of the six regions of the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, the GBR&MP Region delivers conservation and management activities across land and sea including implementing the Reef Joint Field Management Program in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. Additionally, the Region oversees the state's southern marine parks - Great Sandy Marine Park and Moreton Bay Marine Park.

Role focus:

This role's focus is to lead coordination of marine animal strandings and support marine megafauna conservation across Queensland's marine and island national parks within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. You'll develop policies, provide expert advice, and work closely with traditional owners, volunteers, stakeholders, and government partners to enhance response capacity and data collection. Ensuring resources, training, and knowledge are available, you'll help translate strategic conservation plans into action. Additionally, you will contribute to broader park management priorities, support decision-making through reports and briefings and promote strong engagement with First Nations communities.

• Develop policies, legislation, and procedures to support the management of Queensland's national and marine parks, including marine animal strandings responses.
• Provide technical and professional advice to QPWS, government agencies, industry, and the community on marine and island park management issues.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with traditional owners, stakeholders, community groups, and government bodies to support park protection and management.
• Prepare correspondence, reports, submissions, and briefings to inform decisionmaking and support operational staff in marine strandings and megafauna programs.

To be considered you must hold the following qualifications:
• an automatic/ unrestricted manual driver's licence.

To be eligible for this role, you must hold a degree or equivalent (as approved by the Director-General) in conservation, protected area management, marine biology, environmental science, or a related field.
