QBuild is a commercialised business unit of the Queensland Government.  It has been Queensland Government's builder for over 160 years, playing an important role in communities across the state by building and maintaining government-owned assets such as schools, social housing, police stations and correctional and health facilities.

About the role

You will play a pivotal role in supporting QBuild's ambition to strengthen Queensland's building and construction industry by providing a high quality of professional skills in the assessment of projects using both the performance requirements and deemed-to-satisfy provisions of the Building Code of Australia.

Duties and skills involved:

  • Achieving efficient day-to-day time and resources management, project planning, and project management within a team environment to ensure projects are being serviced consistently to meet the client's time, cost, and quality requirements and to contribute to the overall commercial success of QBuild.
  • Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of current building legislation and an awareness of impending changes or revisions to that legislation
  • Maintaining effective building control procedures to promote consistency in the application of the technical provisions of the Building Code of Australia and related building legislation.
  • Liaising with and providing advice to building professionals, clients and user-groups at feasibility, design, documentation, and construction phases of new projects.
  • Performing inspection and advisory services to report upon and correctly exercise the discretionary powers of the assessment authority as demanded by the "Transitional Provisions" of the Building Act 1975 with respect to existing buildings proposed for acquisition, re-development, re-use, or change of use.
  • Reviewing of documentation and inspection of works under construction to verify general compliance with the assessment documentation.
  • Assisting with the review and improvement of the operational effectiveness of Building Surveying's Building Act procedures and the business unit's Quality Assurance policy and procedures.
  • Providing technical advice on legislative interpretations and adjudicate on compliance matters in dispute.
  • Assisting the Manager Building Surveying checking the reviews performed by Assistant Building Surveyors, Building Surveying Technicians, Technical Officers or Cadet Building Surveyors for technical accuracy.
  • Assisting with the use and integration of new technological advancement in the delivery of professional services within the Department.
  • Proactively manage the work performance and personal conduct of your staff.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare high-level reports and other documentation for distribution to stakeholders.
  • Build and sustain positive relationships with customers and team members, respond to changes in customer needs and expectations and actively negotiate for the best outcome possible to meet business objectives.

Additional requirements (mandatory):

  • Possession of a degree-level qualification in a building related profession from a recognised tertiary institution or agreed equivalent as determined by the Chief Executive.
  • Current accreditation issued by an accreditation standards body at the level of Building Surveyor and be eligible for licensing with Queensland Building and Construction Commission at the level of Building Certifier Level 1.
  • Class C drivers licence
  • Ability to obtain a security clearance to enter correctional facilities.
