About the Role 
As the senior lawyer in Legal Aid Queensland's (LAQ) Corporate Legal Services team you will provide advice to Legal Aid Queensland on contract law, administrative law, legislation and policies.
In this role, your responsibilities will include: 

  • Provide of advice on contracts including drafting contracts and amendments.
  • Assist in commercial and legal aspects of contract development and management, including agreements with suppliers of legal services, leases and major contractors.
  • Manage responses to complaints from the Ombudsman's Office relating to the ethical and professional behaviour and competency of Legal Aid lawyers, and to complaints received through the Legal Services Commission, Queensland Law Society and Bar Association of Queensland.
  • Provide advice and support to Legal Aid lawyers in relation to individual complaints received by lawyers through the Legal Services Commission, Queensland Law Society and Bar Association of Queensland.
  • Conduct reviews of decisions on requests for information and provide guidance and expert legal advice regarding sound decision making practices and protection and release of information and documents held by Legal Aid Queensland.
  • Provide assistance to the Chief Executive Officer and the executive on legal issues as required.
  • Undertake other activities associated with Corporate Law Services team's deliverables and initiatives.
  • Contribute to improvements to the policies and procedures associated with Legal Aid Queensland programs and initiatives  

How You Will be Assessed  
The ideal applicant will be someone who has the following capabilities: 

  • You have experience drafting contracts and in contract management and can gather and investigate information, translate information for others and provide impartial and forthright advice.
  • You have knowledge of administrative law including Queensland's administrative privacy scheme, Judicial Review Act 1991, Right to Information Act 2009, Information Privacy Act 2009 and other relevant legislation.
  • You communicate in a clear, concise and articulate manner and ensure documentation procedures are maintained. You can work independently, plan ahead and monitor task progress to meet deadlines

Mandatory Role Requirements  
You must be:

  • admitted or eligible for immediate admission as a legal practitioner in Queensland; and
  • eligible for a current practicing certificate and entry in the High Court Register of Practitioners.
