About the Role

As a lawyer in our graduate program, you will be supervised to prepare cases and advocate on behalf of clients and provide advice about legal matters. We support our staff through ongoing professional development opportunities, mentoring, access to psychological wellness training and a balanced approach to work.

We have multiple positions available across our network including Brisbane, Southport, Cairns and Townsville.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Provide an efficient and effective legal service to clients in accordance with legislation and directions, policy, guidelines and practice standards.
  • Deliver quality legal services by conducting casework including taking instructions, undertaking research and analysis, preparing documents, preparing matters, instructing counsel and once admitted, appear as a lawyer in various courts and tribunals to effectively advocate for legal aid clients.
  • Provide duty lawyer services (when accredited), legal information and advice to clients and the public.
  • Liaise with appropriate Legal Aid Queensland's stakeholders, other government agencies and community organisations in relation to case information.
  • Support Legal Aid Queensland's contributions to policy, procedure, law reform and legal service delivery initiatives as required and participate in the development of team plans and work practices.
  • Respond to guidance and performance feedback and be committed to self-development and knowledge building to remain up to date with legislation, policies and procedural changes.

How You Will be Assessed 
The ideal applicant will be someone who has the following capabilities:

  • Knowledge of various legal jurisdictions and procedure, legislation relating to those various areas of law and relevant ethical standards.
  • Commitment to self-development and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of the law, procedure and the principles of trauma informed practice.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear, concise and articulate manner and engage effectively with stakeholders including clients with complex needs.

Mandatory Role Requirements 

You have graduated with a degree in law, have completed or expect to complete PLT and be admitted by the end of March 2026 and have not practiced as a legal practitioner for more than six months at the time of application.
