In this role, you will provide short-term, holistic, human rights-based social services support to clients with complex needs. You will work collaboratively with lawyers to assist vulnerable and disadvantaged Queenslanders, ensuring culturally appropriate and accessible service delivery.

Legal Aid Queensland (LAQ) is committed to being a leader in a fair justice system where people can understand and protect their legal rights. We provide high-quality, cost-effective legal services to financially disadvantaged Queenslanders. Our Civil Justice Services division specialises in areas such as Anti-Discrimination Law, Consumer Law, Employment Law, Social Security Appeals, and National Disability Insurance Scheme Appeals. We also operate the Farm and Rural Legal Service and coordinate the Civil Law Legal Aid Scheme (CLLAS).

Your responsibilities

As a Social Worker, you will deliver individual crisis intervention and support to clients experiencing vulnerabilities, using a flexible and responsive approach that integrates advocacy, case management, and referrals. You will collaborate with lawyers to assist clients in exploring options, including alternatives to legal action, and support their participation in legal processes. You will maintain accurate documentation, build, and sustain referral networks, and represent Legal Aid Queensland in external forums. Additionally, you will contribute to service improvement strategies, provide training to staff, and assist with policy development and law reform submissions.

The ideal candidate

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A Social Work degree and eligibility for membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team to provide social services to clients with complex needs.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to prepare written referrals and contribute to policy submissions.
  • A commitment to delivering culturally appropriate and accessible services for diverse communities, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, and LGBTIQA+ clients.
  • The ability to build and sustain positive relationships and pursue continuous improvement in your work.

Mandatory requirements

  • Disclosure of any banning orders under s73ZN of the NDIS Act 2013 (if applicable).

Additional information:

This role is not suitable for early career social workers. Due to the nature of the work, you may be exposed to traumatic material or events. A criminal history check and serious disciplinary history check will be undertaken for the recommended applicant. Additionally, applicants must disclose any conflicts of interest or employment as a lobbyist in the preceding two years.
