Cross River Rail will transform the way we travel to, from and through Brisbane in the future. It is a catalyst for wider rail transformation underway across the South East Queensland and it is already playing a key role in how we prepare for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Cross River Rail is a new 10.2km rail line including 5.9km of twin tunnels running under the Brisbane River and CBD, with four new underground stations. The Cross River Rail Delivery Authority is also tasked with multiple supporting projects and activities, including accessibility rebuilds for eight surface stations, construction of three new stations on the Gold Coast, upgrades for stabling yards, track works and surface rail enhancements, and the introduction of a new world-class digital train signalling system.

About the Role

The Safety Manager provides client-side leadership, guidance, and oversight of safety matters across the Cross River Rail program. You will ensure CRRDA's safety systems are embedded throughout every stage of delivery, influencing contractor culture and performance while supporting the capability of internal teams. The role is responsible for compliance and assurance activities, critical risk management, and preparing clear reporting and advice that informs executive decision-making.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide safety leadership and assurance across the program, setting expectations for performance and culture. and assurance activities across the program of works, setting expectations for performance and culture.
  • Influence contractor safety culture through proactive engagement, performance review and the promotion of best practice.
  • Oversee compliance, incident investigations, and critical risk reviews, ensuring findings are actioned and lessons shared.
  • Prepare safety reporting, trend analyses, and briefing notes that provide both operational detail and strategic insight for senior leadership and governance forums.
  • Develop and implement safety processes and initiatives that enable line managers to take ownership of safety outcomes.
  • Represent CRRDA in safety forums, cross-agency working groups, and industry forums, building collaborative relationships that support delivery outcomes.
  • Mentor and coach CRRDA staff and project managers to uplift capability and embed accountability for safety outcomes.
  • Review safety systems to identify improvement opportunities, develop risk mitigation strategies, and implement treatment plans to strengthen performance across the program.

About You:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a safety-related discipline, with strong knowledge of risk management, safety assurance, incident investigation and systems implementation.
  • Experience in major infrastructure, construction or mining projects, with a sound understanding of contractor safety management and client-side governance.
  • Strong understanding of critical risks and the application of verification processes in complex and changing environments.
  • Ability to manage complex workplace relationships and coordinate stakeholders with competing objectives, achieving outcomes through third parties.
  • Proven stakeholder engagement skills, with experience collaborating effectively with delivery partners, regulators and government agencies.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, able to interpret data, simplify technical concepts and adjust messaging for different audiences.
  • Experienced in mentoring non-safety staff and supporting managers to embed accountability and lift safety capability.
