Police Dog Development Officer

The Police Dog Development Officer position is located at the Brisbane Dog Squad Complex, 2338 Ipswich Road, Oxley. The Dog Squad Training and Development Centre co-share accommodation with the Brisbane Dog Squad. This position is responsible for the training and development of recruit dogs for the QPS dog squad. These recruit dogs are 8 weeks of age through to 18 months.

This position also supports the dog squad breeding and foster care programs. This position is targeted at general purpose dog training predominantly German Shepherds in the disciplines of tracking, apprehension and obedience.

Your key accountabilities

The core capability requirements for this role are:

• Support breeding and whelping of dogs.
• Condition and focus the genetic drives of pups and dogs to meet Service needs.
• Maintain currency and knowledge of contemporary dog training and development theories.
• Monitor and evaluate the development of pups and dogs who are candidates for operational work.
• Provide advice and assistance to foster carers involved in the canine foster care program and monitor and evaluate foster care policies concerning the treatment and handling of pups.
• Assist with the assessment of potential police dogs offered to the Queensland Police Service, or to be purchased, as to their suitability to perform the duties required.
• Maintain dog development aides.
• Create and maintain accurate records of animals in QPS.
• Comply with Police Dog Training Unit Standing Orders.

Role Requirements

Technical/ Operational/ Educational experience

• Qualifications or extensive practical experience in animal husbandry and/or dog training would be highly regarded.
