The Youth Detention Strategic Projects and Oversight Liaison team coordinates responses and provides strategic advice to internal and external oversight bodies. The team fosters partnerships across the oversight and advocacy sector to support transparent, accountable youth detention services.

Key activities include responding to formal requests, tracking recommendations, and supporting governance and reform initiatives.

The Senior Advisor contributes by coordinating oversight responses, supporting strategic projects, and developing governance frameworks and reporting tools. Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills are essential to ensure timely, high-quality outputs.

Key Responsibilities:

As Senior Advisor, Strategic Projects and Oversight Liaison you will specifically:

  • Coordinate and contribute to the development and implementation of strategic projects and initiatives related to youth detention reform and oversight, ensuring alignment with departmental priorities and governance frameworks.
  • Undertake research and analysis of operational issues, including oversight recommendations, and work with relevant internal business areas to develop evidence-based strategic and operational solutions requiring a departmental response.
  • Prepare high-quality written materials including reports, briefings, ministerial correspondence, and responses to oversight bodies, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Manage components of youth detention reform initiatives, including project planning, stakeholder engagement, development of documentation, and preparation of high-quality materials, while supporting the monitoring of timelines and performance measures to track progress and outcomes.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including youth detention centres, oversight bodies, and advocacy groups, to ensure collaborative approaches to reform and effective communication of project objectives.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of governance tools, such as tracking systems for recommendations and reporting frameworks.
  • Provide advice to the Manager and Director on complex youth detention service delivery issues, including emerging trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Demonstrate cultural capability and a commitment to human rights by contributing to improved outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.
