Great Barrier Reef and Marine Parks (GBR&MP) Region are excited to share an incredible opportunity for a Project Officer to join the team on a temporary basis.

As one of the six regions of the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, the GBR&MP Region delivers conservation and management activities across land and sea including implementing the Reef Joint Field Management Program in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. Additionally, the Region oversees the state's southern marine parks - Great Sandy Marine Park and Moreton Bay Marine Park.

As a Project Officer, you will play a crucial role in managing and supporting tenure and estate-related projects within the GBR&MP region's island protected areas. This position focuses on newly acquired islands (less than five years) within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area (GBRWHA), where conservation, rehabilitation, and asset rationalisation are top priorities.

Your responsibilities will span across various facets of project management, including research, site visits, drafting project documentation, procurement activities, and stakeholder engagement. You will work closely with both internal teams and external partners to ensure projects are delivered efficiently and effectively. This role requires strong collaboration skills, as you will facilitate workshops, lead consultations, and represent the Department at stakeholder forums.

Unlike roles centred on marine park tourism and outdoor recreation, this position emphasizes the management of newly protected island areas, making knowledge and experience in island protected area management and project management highly valuable.

Join our team to lead impactful conservation projects protecting newly acquired island estates in the iconic Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

Role focus:
• Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team to develop and improve strategies for newly acquired islands
• Provide expert advice and support to regional staff, department teams, and external stakeholders on relevant issues
• Assist in policy development, prepare reports and briefings, and represent the Department at industry forums and committees.
• Promote a workplace culture that respects and supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, contributing to positive outcomes for First Nations communities.

To be considered you must hold the following qualifications:
• an unrestricted manual driver's licence

To apply:
Lodge an application online at www.smartjobs.qld.gov.au that consists of the following:
• your current resume of no more than 2 pages
• a short 1 page statement that briefly describes why you are the best suited person for this role

Applications will remain current for 12 months.
