In the role of Principal Engineer (Vehicle Standards), you will provide technical advice that contributes to enhanced transport policy outcomes. Leveraging your experience in the automotive industry, you will support accurate and consistent
operational decision-making and inform important policy and legislative projects. You will represent TMR at state and national forums where you will have the opportunity to input into the development and maintenance of vehicle standards. You will provide technical advice to support compliance activities and the work of other government agencies including the Queensland Police Service (QPS). This role will be complex, challenging and rewarding - important work usually is.
Some of your responsibilities will include:
• Provide technical advice to support objective and evidence-based decision making by the Vehicle Standards Operational Unit including on vehicle importations and modifications.
• Represent TMR at regular forums to support the development and modification of Australian Standards, the Australian Design Rules and the work of national safety non-regulatory advocacy groups including the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).
• Monitor and provide technical advice on the latest developments in vehicle design and technology that may enhance or adversely impact desired transport system outcomes.
• Write and/or review complex reports, briefing notes, submissions, departmental and other correspondence of a technical nature in accordance with departmental standards.
• Develop and maintain effective networks, and consult and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders, interest groups, other government agencies (federal, state and local) and the general public.
• Contribute your technical expertise to an array of policy and legislative projects to ensure the rules and regulations which govern vehicle standards in Queensland are technically accurate, up to date, achievable and supportive of positive road safety outcomes.
• Research and provide advice to senior management on technical issues relating to road use, vehicle operations or vehicle safety to enhance desired transport system outcomes. This could include vehicle design, emission control, safety features and functions.
• Support the compliance activities of TMR and the QPS by contributing to the development of training and guidance materials including to assist in the accurate identification of vehicle non-compliance.
