The Role
As the Principal Finance Officer, you will play a pivotal leadership role in shaping the department's financial strategy and ensuring high-quality financial management across budgeting, forecasting, performance reporting and strategic resource planning.
You will lead and coordinate core elements of the department's annual budget cycle, including Budget Papers, funding submissions and Treasury documentation, ensuring financial information is robust, timely and influential in executive decisionmaking. In this role, you will work closely with Directors, Executives and program areas to provide authoritative advice on budgets, financial performance, policy compliance
and resourcing strategies. You will contribute to strategic initiatives, support major programs and election commitments, and uplift financial literacy and best-practice financial processes across the department.
This role may be tailored to support program-level, business area, or external reporting functions, and you will collaborate flexibly across the Finance Branch to support high performance, continuity and improvement.
About you
You are an experienced financial professional who brings strong analytical capability, excellent judgment and the confidence to provide high-level advice in a complex public sector environment.
You demonstrate strategic thinking, the ability to interpret financial trends, and a talent for communicating financial information clearly to both financial and nonfinancial audiences. You are proactive, solutions-focused and committed to continuous improvement.
You lead with accountability, empowering team members, supporting high-quality outputs and building strong relationships across the organisation. Experience with SAP, Tridata, Power BI and complex budget processes will be highly regarded, as will tertiary qualifications in accounting, commerce or a related field.
