Senior Health and Safety Advisor


Support; Far Northern Region; Cairns

The Senior Health and Safety Advisor will provide high level leadership, coaching and advisory services across the region to influence and drive health and safety initiatives that are designed to improve safety culture, align with organisational strategy and continually improve workplace health and safety (WHS) performance. The role will also ensure that workplace practices within the region are continually monitored and reviewed to ensure compliance with relevant legislative requirements.

  • Using high level knowledge, provide strategic and technical advice and guidance to senior management and supervisors in the delivery and implementation of the QAS workplace health and safety management system (including, but not limited to hazard and risk management applicable to QAS operational environments, employee health, complex injury/case management, workers' compensation matters, WHS governance and assurance).
  • Actively lead and support senior leaders, managers and supervisors to ensure that health and safety risks are monitored and managed through evidence-based practice and risk management approaches, that safe systems of work are implemented to ensure legislative compliance, and the highest practicable level of health and safety performance within the region is achieved.
  • Provide professional supervision and leadership for the regional health and safety advisors to ensure high levels of workplace health and safety performance is achieved across the region.
  • Work collaboratively and in partnership with the QAS Workplace Health and Safety Unit to drive improved performance of the region to ensure that organisational, industrial, legal, insurer and policy requirements are met.
  • Deliver coaching, training and presentations to regional managers and supervisors to ensure that individuals possess the capabilities to achieve the required level of individual performance and safety leadership, across all aspects of their health, safety and injury management responsibilities, in accordance with the approved QAS safety management system.
  • Oversee the rehabilitation and return to work coordination function in the region and actively monitor, review and evaluate employee health, injury management and rehabilitation practices to ensure legislative compliance and the highest practicable level of injury management strategies and/or function as the rehabilitation and return to work coordinator, as required by the region.
  • Develop and deliver effective communication, consultation and engagement strategies (including oversight of the engagement of the health and safety representatives and/or other consultation mechanisms) within the region.
  • Liaise with regulators and other external parties in the region and develop, prepare and monitor relevant correspondence, advice and interventions to ensure notifiable incidents and regulatory infringements are managed appropriately within the region.
  • Continually monitor and analyse relevant data and business information to recognise trends and devise actions to improve health and safety performance, including to reduce injury and illness, optimise employee health, minimise loss of productivity and reduce the impact of statutory and common law claims.
  • Prepare timely and well researched briefings, submissions, presentations and correspondence in relation to health and safety issues as required and in consultation with key stakeholders.
  • As a leader, actively demonstrate and promote the QAS's approach of zero tolerance towards violence and commit to supporting those affected by domestic and family violence in accordance with QAS policies and mechanisms. Model and influence a workplace culture of gender equality, respectful relationships, diversity, inclusion, employee safety and support.
  • Uphold the QAS Statement of Commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and Cultural Safety Policy Statement and prioritise safe, effective, quality healthcare that is free from racism and discrimination.
  • Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in accordance with Queensland Public Sector and QAS values.
