Coronial Support Unit (CSU) plays a vital role in ensuring that Coroners have effective investigations conducted on their behalf and members of the Queensland Police Service are provided with sufficient support and information to perform these roles and functions when responding to and investigating a reportable death under the Coroners Act 2003.

This role will directly and indirectly liaise with coroners, pathologists and FSG management.

Your key accountabilities  

The core capability requirements for this role are: 

  • Capture investigative images at the mortuary for all requested coronial autopsies for use by the Coroner, Investigators, Forensic Pathologist and Judiciary. 
  • Accurately maintain case notes and collect, record and lodge evidence during autopsies, in various forms, as authorised by the Superintendent, Forensic Services Group.  
  • Utilise imaging techniques and technology to assist in formal identification of deceased persons and crime scene incident comparisons. 
  • Comply with legislation, standards and procedures as required by Forensic Service Group, including quality assurance and workplace health and safety guidelines. 
  • Provide evidence, either in affidavit form or personally, in Courts or other Tribunals. 
  • Assist in the review, identification and implementation of new and emerging imaging technologies, solutions and products that support organisational requirements. 
  • Utilise digital imaging post-production techniques to meet required outcomes. 
  • Establish and maintain effective internal and external stakeholder communication channels to ensure desired outcomes are met  
  • Assist CSU with compiling the documentation of forensic images, including appropriate classification, for the Coroner in relation to coronial and investigative matters. 

Role Requirements: 

Mandatory -  

  • Possession of a current Queensland driver's license Class C or equivalent license. 

Qualification - 

  • Possession of a Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging; or a Diploma of Photography from a recognised tertiary institution; or equivalent qualifications. 

Other - 

  • The successful applicant may be required to travel intrastate at short notice. 
  • The successful applicant will be required to undergo psychometric assessment prior to appointment.  
  • Awareness and observance of psychosocial hazards and risks to self and all other stakeholders is an expectation of this role. 
  • This position involves regular exposure to the bodies of deceased persons of all ages, often in all states of disfigurement, decomposition and/or disruption. 
  • Applicants are advised that whilst performing the duties of the position they will be exposed to material (written, visual and audio) of a graphic and sensitive nature. 
  • Applicants will be required to provide a elimination DNA sample for inclusion on the police DNA database.
  • Applicants will be required to conduct ongoing assessments in relation to their health and wellbeing.
