Regional and Regulation Support provides operational support and advice to the areas of the Environmental Services and Regulation (ESR) division that are responsible for the assessment and compliance of the resource industry (including minerals mining, coal mining and petroleum and gas) and other industries (known as prescribed activities, such as landfills and quarries).

In this role you will lead interaction with various staff in the ESR division including working alongside environmental officers responsible for assessment activities. Your role will be to provide support in the form of contributing to key operational policy projects, providing input into legislative changes and their implementation, developing support materials for internal DETSI and external stakeholders and supporting delivery of training on new legislative obligations and/or guidance. This role may include coordinating and responding to requests on behalf of the team, including coordinating requests for information with short timeframes.

As the Principal Environmental Officer, you will:

As the Principal Environmental Officer, you will:

  • Collaboratively work with a range of multi-disciplinary teams, ensuring effective and consistent service delivery and quality outcomes to improve efficiencies in business practices, process and systems with a focus on customer service delivery and the implementation of legislative and reform agendas, strategies and initiatives across 
    the department.
  • Provide advice, guidance and direction to less experienced staff, managing complex and contentious matters. 
    Undertake investigations on complex issues requiring policy analysis, legislative interpretation for the preparation of advice, briefs, ministerial and executive correspondence, submissions, publications and other correspondence on environmental issues.
  • Maintain effective collaborative relationships with: 
    • Internal stakeholders (including other divisions and government agencies) to ensure projects are aligned to the needs of the department and the Division, and that government reforms can be effectively implemented. 
    • External stakeholders with a view to keeping them informed of significant changes in best practice, to ensure the teams work reflects contemporary regulatory approaches.
  • Prepare written communication material (e.g. reports, briefing notes etc) on a range of complex issues and proposals.
  • Proactively support a workplace culture that is consistent with the department's culture and values, and proactively implement any recognised team values.
  • Promote a safe, respectful and inclusive workplace that is free from bullying, discrimination and harassment.
