Principal Data Governance Officer

The Principal Data Governance Officer will play a critical role in the stewardship of data governance frameworks and policies to support the various organisational needs within the department and other departments supported under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This position will play a key role in supporting our organisation's data culture, aligning with business objectives, and mitigating data risks.

As a Principal Data Governance Officer, you will:
- Lead the creation and maintenance of data governance policies, standards, procedures and specified agreements to ensure consistent data and information practices across the department and with external organisations.
- Lead data stakeholder engagement to define and maintain roles and responsibilities related to data governance within the organisation to ensure accountability.
- Collaborate with the departments' Data Governance Boards to establish and maintain innovative ways of working that cultivate a data culture that balances risk and business value.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to embed data and information governance practices throughout the organisation.
- Oversee initiatives to evaluate the effectiveness of data governance policies and practices, improve data quality and enable the creation of key data definitions.
- Establish reporting that provides appropriate focus on areas of improvement based on maturity uplift targets and visibility of data risk for the departments.
- Identify, train and partner with data stakeholders as necessary for effective and mature data governance practice.
Role specific/technical skills
- Strong ability to apply relevant government legislation, regulations, and reporting directives.
- Comprehensive knowledge of data governance principles, data management standards and Australian data protection regulations.
- A strong understanding of information security and privacy principles and practices as it relates to data.
