QPS Legal Services represents the Service before the courts, as well as the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal and other tribunals, in relation to matters such as discipline, discrimination, inquests and appeals.
We also provide legal advice and executive support to the Commissioner and Senior Executive on a range of issues including contractual and partnership agreements, statutory interpretation and release of information.

The core capability requirements for this role are:
- Provide high quality, confidential advice, on short notice to the Commissioner and other members of the Senior Executive of the Queensland Police Service on complex and sensitive legal matters including, compensation, agreements with Government and non-government entities, complex criminal matters; release, access and disclosure of information, discipline of police officers and associated legal and industrial issues.
- Represent the Queensland Police Service before the courts and tribunals on matters such as appeals, applications, coronial inquests and judicial reviews.
- Represent the Queensland Police Service before the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) at directions hearings and hearings of disciplinary and discrimination matters.
- Preparation and attendance at compulsory conciliation conferences, and the preparation and drafting of written submissions and findings.
- Provide legal advice, where appropriate, to operational police officers concerning substantive law and police powers relating to investigations and police operations.
- Supervise and mentor legal officers within the QPS Legal Unit as required by the Director, Legal Services.
- Maintain and comply with the highest standards of professional and ethical conduct.
