About the OIA
The OIA is a statutory authority responsible for assessing, investigating, and prosecuting allegations of misconduct by councillors. We operate with transparency, balance, and a strong focus on building capacity within the local government sector. Our aim is to maintain trust in the integrity of councillors in Queensland.
The Role
As the Director, Legal Services, you will:
- Provide strategic and operational leadership to the legal team.
- Lead and supervise the legal team in delivering authoritative advice to OIA officers regarding investigation and potential prosecution of councillor misconduct and associated matters.
- Provide high-level legal advice to OIA officers, ensuring the successful prosecution of disciplinary applications.
- Lead the implementation of government reform agendas, ensuring OIA legal functions and processes remain responsive to legislative changes and strategic priorities.
- Be an active and present member of the OIA's Leadership team, fostering a positive culture of strong teamwork, open communication, leadership, innovation, inclusion and diversity.
About You
We are looking for a dynamic, results-driven individual with:
- Tertiary qualifications in law and eligibility for legal practice in Queensland.
- Proven expertise in interpreting and applying legislation, administrative law principles, and investigation processes.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and supervise a team, manage complex legal matters, and provide clear, authoritative advice.
- The resilience and high-level critical thinking required to lead a team through a period of legislative reform.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex legal concepts and influence decision-making.
- A strong sense of self-awareness and thoughtful reflection on leadership strengths, style and impacts as a positive and effective leader.
- Familiarity with local government legislation and processes are highly regarded.
