The role of the Senior Training Instructor is to lead the delivery of high-quality training and assessment (including competency-based training) to youth detention staff and contribute to the strategic and operational objectives of the youth detention centres.

You will work as part of a dynamic team to deliver high quality training and assessment (including competency-based training) and to undertake general administrative duties to support youth detention training. This position will play a critical role in the delivery of training to new and existing youth detention operational staff, as well as providing leadership and mentorship to the Training Instructors.

As Senior Training Instructor, you will specifically:

  • Demonstrate cultural capability and/or a commitment to developing cultural capability to ensure an inclusive culture that aligns with the Human Rights Act 2019 and supports departmental programs and community partnerships aimed at preserving cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Lead the delivery of use of force training (inclusive of verbal and non-verbal co-regulation techniques and physical skills) to youth detention operational staff as per the policy and approved training materials.
  • Lead the delivery of other training to youth detention staff including induction and mandatory competency training as per the policy and approved training materials.
  • Lead feedback and assessment processes as per approved assessment tools. Address conduct and performance issues as required. Resolve assessment queries and disputes, escalating to management as required.
  • Have a deep understanding of youth detention trauma-informed and culturally competent practices and ensure these concepts are contextualised and taught throughout all training.
  • Ensure participants are provided coaching and mentoring to support course completion requirements.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of trainers and instructors to support their professional development and quality training outcomes.
  • Contribute to, and as required lead, assessment validation, moderation and continuous improvement activities.
  • Ensure compliance with risk management processes to ensure the safety of all persons in the training environment. Identify, resolve and escalate risks and issues as required.
  • Communicate with other training team members and youth detention management about participant progress.
  • Ensure participant training records are maintained, and other training-related administrative duties are completed.
  • Work with the Training Coordinator and other stakeholders to support training delivery and quality outcomes.
  • Provide high-level advice and input into curriculum reviews and updates. Develop training materials as required
  • As required, support incident review processes and provide advice to youth detention management.
