As a Farmhand at the South Johnstone Research Facility, you’ll contribute to cuttingedge banana and tropical horticultural research. You’ll support research projects by operating and maintaining equipment, managing crops, and maintaining farm infrastructure. This hands-on role requires experience in banana farming, including pest and disease management, and the ability to perform physical tasks safely.

The opportunity
As a Farmhand at the South Johnstone Research Facility, you will play a vital role in supporting Queensland's banana and tropical horticultural research. Located in Boogan, just 12 kilometres south-southwest of Innisfail, this facility is a hub for innovation and collaboration between the Queensland Government and private enterprises. Your work will directly contribute to advancing agricultural practices and ensuring the sustainability of Queensland's horticultural industries.

In this role, you will:
Operate, adjust, and maintain specialised agricultural equipment, including fertiliser and chemical application machinery, tillage equipment, and research tools.
Undertake agricultural activities such as land preparation, irrigation, planting, harvesting, and pest and disease management for field and tree crops.
Perform property maintenance, including fencing, irrigation systems, gardening, and infrastructure repairs, ensuring the facility remains research-ready and operational.

What we are looking for (qualifications, registrations, experience)
To excel in this role, you will need:
A current “C” class driver's licence.
Extensive experience in banana farming operations, including pest and disease management.
Physical fitness to perform manual tasks such as lifting (up to 15kg), carrying, kneeling, and working in various outdoor conditions.
While not mandatory, the following qualifications are desirable:
Chemical accreditation (ChemCert) or the willingness to obtain this within 12 months (training support provided).
