The Senior Cultural Adviser provides strategic cultural advice, supports culturally appropriate programs and services, and strengthens relationships with Elders, community organisations and key stakeholders.
By promoting cultural safety, supporting reintegration, and enhancing engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, the role contributes to more effective service delivery and helps address the over‑representation of First Nations peoples in the criminal justice system.
This position plays a vital part in embedding cultural knowledge, supporting staff capability, and fostering respectful, culturally informed practices across QCS.

The Senior Cultural Advisor provides strategic advice to the Superintendent on culturally appropriate programs, services, practices and issues that impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce and offenders. The position will also be responsible for ensuring open communication and linkages with the community.
In this role the successful applicant will:
• Provide cultural support and advice to senior management across a range of culturally appropriate programs, services and practices.
• Research, analysis and project management capability - Investigate, analyse, interpret and evaluate information pertaining to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues for the guidance of senior management.
• Support Program Delivery Officers to facilitate programs that will help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients reintegrate into their communities and family networks.
• Coach and mentor staff through the provision of constructive feedback.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of cultural capability, supervision and a skilled and responsive workforce.
• Assist in the development and implementation of the Reconciliation Action Plan and Cultural Capability Action Plan.
• Initiate, encourage and facilitate greater engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community groups to promote involvement in culturally significant meetings, forums, events and festivals such as NAIDOC Week. Including the promotion of these events within the staff group.
• Liaise with stakeholders, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, respected community members, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations to identify their needs and expectations of service delivery and to determine if current services and activities are satisfying their requirements.
• Establish and maintain a network of connections with organisations, Elders and respected community members to ensure culturally safe and respectful relationships to facilitate stronger cultural capacity across the Agency. This is also to assist those on Orders or coming out of custody and includes working with current networks (Justice Groups).
• Support management to consult and liaise with key community groups, stakeholders, and Traditional Owner groups.
• Work openly with other team members to share knowledge, advice and best practice in relation to cultural safety and competence.
• Build trust and rapport with other CLOs within the region and across the State (Community Corrections and Custodial Centres) and undertake appropriate information sharing, to enhance contact and service delivery.
• Liaise with the members of the QCS First Nations Reference Group in relation to any issues of concern.
• Establish effective interpersonal, written communication and engagement strategies with key clients to meet business and operational needs that support the application of practicable initiatives and link people, process and systems.
• Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in accordance with Queensland Corrective Services values, as outlined above, and in accordance with the values outlined for the public service with the Queensland Government.
The role description provides the minimum requirements for the role. The incumbent may be required to undertake other duties as required outside of these primary accountabilities.
