Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is committed to creating connected communities across Queensland through safe, sustainable and innovative transport solutions. The Central Queensland Region delivers infrastructure across a vast and diverse area—from coastal corridors to outback highways—supporting local communities and regional economies.
The Technical Services team provides high‑level design, technical governance and professional advice to ensure transport infrastructure projects meet legislative, safety and quality standards.
The role
As a Principal Designer (Civil), you will provide expert leadership in the planning and design of transport infrastructure projects across Central Queensland. You will lead design activities from concept through to implementation, ensuring designs meet technical standards, legislative requirements and value‑for‑money outcomes.
This role combines hands‑on technical expertise with leadership—mentoring junior designers and cadets, reviewing complex designs, and providing authoritative design advice to internal and external stakeholders.
Key responsibilities include:
• Leading the operational delivery of transport planning and design projects
• Providing expert interpretation and application of design standards, policies and guidelines
• Reviewing and quality‑assuring civil designs at key project milestones
• Mentoring and developing design staff and cadets
• Contributing to innovation and continuous improvement in design practices
• Building strong relationships across project planning, delivery and operational teams
About you
You are a technically accomplished civil design professional who enjoys leading people, solving complex problems and delivering high‑quality outcomes. You bring strong judgement, attention to detail and the ability to influence project success through collaboration and expertise.
Mandatory requirements:
• A minimum three‑year Sydney Accord‑accredited engineering qualification (or recognised equivalent)
• Current Class C driver licence
• Ability to satisfy pre‑employment checks, including criminal history screening
• Experience in transport infrastructure design and the use of design tools such as AutoCAD and 12d Model will be highly regarded.
