The position contributes to curriculum development, assessment design, training evaluation and continuous improvement, while supporting centre‑based instructors through coaching, guidance and professional development. This role plays a vital part in strengthening operational capability, maintaining safety during high‑risk training, and ensuring QCS officers are equipped with the skills required to operate safely and effectively.

Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) delivers safe, modern and responsive correctional services that support rehabilitation and reduce crime across Queensland. The Training Officer, Tactical Skills plays a key role in strengthening operational capability by delivering high‑quality tactical skills training that ensures custodial officers are confident, competent and prepared for the demands of frontline correctional environments.
Working under the direct supervision of the Senior Training Adviser, Tactical Skills, the Training Officer is responsible for delivering firearms, tactical skills and chemical agents training to new and existing custodial correctional officers, as well as to QCS instructors. The role ensures training is delivered consistently, safely and in accordance with agency procedures, policies and accreditation requirements.
A core component of the position is contributing to the design, review and implementation of instructional and assessment standards that support statewide consistency across all tactical skills programs. This includes assisting with the development of assessment activities, reviewing training and assessment processes, and evaluating training tools to ensure they meet departmental policies and competency requirements. The Training Officer also contributes to continuous improvement by analysing training evaluation data and identifying opportunities to enhance curriculum and delivery.
The role provides professional development, coaching and support to centre‑based tactical skills, firearms and chemical agents instructors, promoting high standards of instructional practice across QCS. This includes evaluating training delivered by centre‑based instructors and guiding them to ensure compliance with agency expectations and best‑practice methodologies.
Strong collaboration with correctional centre management is essential to coordinate training calendars, support mandatory training compliance and ensure operational needs are met. The Training Officer also plays a critical role in maintaining safety during high‑risk training activities, applying Workplace Health and Safety principles and ensuring appropriate risk controls are in place.
Additional responsibilities include assisting with the review of staff injuries during training, completing system reports, and managing the safe storage, transport and issue of weapons, ammunition and munitions in accordance with relevant legislation. The role also conducts armoury audits and reports outcomes as required.
Role Suitability
- Experience and a detailed understanding of the correctional centre operational environment.
- Knowledge of adult learning principles and their application to tactical skills training.
- Understanding of Workplace Health and Safety requirements in the context of high risk training delivery.
- Strong planning and organisational skills to coordinate training in line with agency schedules.
- Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and operate effectively within a team environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to deliver high quality training.
