Exciting opportunity as a Director to make a significant impact in delivering a justice policy and legislation reform agenda within the Department of Justice. Strategic Policy and Legislation, within the DoJ Justice Policy and Reform Division, has wide reaching responsibilities that support the operation of Queensland’s justice system and develops proposals for primary and subordinate legislation within the Justice portfolio.
As the Director, you will lead and manage a skilled team of policy and legal officers to deliver significant government outcomes in criminal law and criminal justice policy, including appearing at parliamentary committee hearings. We are seeking a skilled policy and legislation professional, energised by fast-paced, complex environments and who excels at leading diverse teams.

About the role
Strategic Policy and Legislation (SPL) has wide reaching responsibilities that support the operation of Queensland's justice system. SPL has teams that focus on specific aspects of policy and legislation. The criminal Law teams focus on law and policy with respect to criminal law and criminal justice reform, including the Criminal Code, sentencing laws, criminal procedure and jurisdiction, organised crime, drugs misuse and many other aspects of criminal justice policy.
The Director will lead and manage a team of policy and legal officers to deliver government outcomes in criminal law and criminal justice policy. By working with us you will be part of a team that has a crucial role to lead legislative and policy projects in relation to the criminal law and criminal justice matters.
What you will bring
To thrive in this role, you will need:
- Demonstrated understanding of key issues and emerging trends in criminal law and criminal justice policy and their implications for the Queensland Government and the community.
- Experience in leading a complex policy and legislative reform agenda including stakeholder consultation, Cabinet and legislative processes.
- Proven strategic leadership in a policy environment with demonstrated high level ability to consider the ramifications of a wide range of issues, anticipate priorities and break through problems.
- Proven ability to drive change, build and develop organisational capacity and foster teamwork, cooperation and collaboration across criminal law teams and the department.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to negotiate, consult and communicate complex and sensitive issues to government, legal and community stakeholders.
- To drive a culture of respect and inclusivity across the organisation, prioritising service delivery that considers diverse needs.
