Based in tropical Cairns, this role offers an exceptional lifestyle for someone who thrives in the field, keeps up with technology and feels a deep connection to the natural environment. As a Resource Ranger, your days will be shaped by purpose: protecting threatened species, caring for country, responding to fire and natural events, and working alongside dedicated colleagues, Traditional Owners and local communities. As an OO5 Resource Ranger, you will play a key role in planning and delivering conservation, land, fire and pest management programs across National parks and protected area estates in the Cairns area. Working with a high degree of autonomy under the guidance of the Senior Ranger, you will lead and supervise field-based work groups, coordinate projects, and contribute to regional and state conservation objectives. The role balances hands on operational work with planning, reporting and stakeholder engagement, requiring sound judgement, strong organisation skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities and conditions.
You will be involved in park planning, ecosystem assessment, threatened species management, fire planning and response, pest plant and animal control. The work is physically demanding and often undertaken in remote, tropical environments, requiring confidence operating plant and equipment including four-wheel drives. Emergency response duties — including wildfire, search and rescue and natural disaster preparedness — are a core part of the position, as is compliance and enforcement under relevant legislation.
Strong communication skills are essential. You will work closely with Rangers in Charge, Technical Services teams, neighbouring landholders, Traditional Owners, other agencies and park visitors to achieve shared outcomes. You will also model inclusive leadership, contribute to a positive team culture, and support the department's commitment to respectful engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This role will suit someone with demonstrated experience in natural resource conservation and land management and a solid understanding of conservation principles, workplace health and safety, and regulatory frameworks. You will be comfortable working independently, applying initiative and practical problem-solving skills, while also contributing effectively to a team. Above all, this is a role for a capable, motivated person who is ready to take responsibility for delivering high quality, on ground outcomes in some of Queensland's most valued natural places.
