The Role
Reporting to the Director, Dam Safety, you will lead a team of approximately 12 engineers and oversee the engineering and technical components of dam safety regulation. The team is responsible for the assessment of dam designs, safety reviews, inspections and engineering investigations, and for providing technical input into regulatory decision‑making and policy development.
You will work across a diverse range of engineering and regulatory matters, balancing people leadership with high‑level technical oversight. As a member of the broader senior management team, you will contribute to strategic planning, briefing senior decision‑makers on critical dam safety issues, and maintaining the department's reputation as a trusted and authoritative dam safety regulator.
Key Accountabilities:
• Provide leadership and people management for a multidisciplinary engineering team, including performance, capability development and succession planning
• Oversee the quality, consistency and timeliness of technical assessments and regulatory processes
• Assess dam designs, safety reviews, engineering inspections and related investigations
• Undertake or oversee consequence assessments, flood capacity and engineering analyses of dams using contemporary tools and methodologies
• Provide expert advice when concerns are raised at dams, including support during incidents
• Contribute to strategic oversight, policy development and statutory guidelines for dam safety regulation
• Prepare briefings and provide advice to senior executives and government on dam safety matters
• Represent the regulator through engagement with industry, including training, workshops and conferences
About You
You are a confident and credible engineering professional with strong leadership capability and a commitment to public sector values. You are comfortable working with complex technical and regulatory information and providing sound, well reasoned advice.
You will bring:
• A Bachelor of Engineering and registration as a Professional Engineer of Queensland (mandatory)
• Significant experience in dam engineering, water infrastructure or a related field
• Proven leadership and people management experience
• Strong judgement, communication skills and the ability to build productive partnerships
