Your role will support the department to provide industry regulatory reform, public works building and design services, housing assistance and homelessness support services.

What you will be doing:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of strategic policy for Government while responding to the needs of key stakeholders.
  • Develop a detailed and thorough understanding of the practical and operational impacts/implications of building, plumbing and other relevant legislation.
  • Develop informative resources and training material to support local governments, industry stakeholders in understanding and complying with relevant legislation, codes and policy.
  • Represent the Department's interests and provide building policy leadership at State levels as required on forums, groups and committees.
  • Undertake and manage research into the continuous improvement of Queensland building and plumbing legislation and standards so that they are aligned with national, international and built environment development trends.
  • Develop and implement effective communication, engagement and consultation strategies for both internal and external stakeholders, and with the community for policy and legislation issues relating the building and construction industry.
  • Prepare briefings and assist with the management of Cabinet, Executive Council, Parliamentary and legislative matters, including preparation of high- level documentation, such as Executive Council Minute briefs, public Discussion Papers, etc.
  • Promote and maintain a high performance and continuous improvement-oriented culture, consistent with the department's values, employment equity and workplace health and safety principles and practices.

The skills you will need include being able to:

  • Demonstrated ability to advise and interpret legislation, standards, policies, guidelines and practices.
  • Understanding of the policy development processes, the Queensland Government Better Regulation Policy, including progressing legislative amendments, and conducting a regulatory impact statement.
  • Ability to provide high quality written and oral advice to a leadership team and stakeholders on a range of issues.
  • Experience or familiarity with building, plumbing or other relevant legislation, codes and standards is highly regarded.
